What size phase converter do I need?
The size of the phase converter required is dependent on several factors. It is primarily dependent on the horsepower (HP) of your equipment, the number of machines operating simultaneously, and the type of load (resistive, inductive, or high inrush, like air compressors or CNCs).
Use our recommended sizing document and YouTube video walkthrough, which can both be found under the resources tab at PowerlinePhaseConverter.com, to accurately calculate your needs. If you are still unsure or want assistance, reach out to us through our email (powerlinephaseconverter@gmail.com) or phone number (231-577-9217). We’d be happy to help.
Can I run more than one machine with a phase converter?
Absolutely - Yes, our rotary phase converters are capable of powering multiple three-phase machines from a single unit. The key is to ensure that the converter you are utilizing is sized to handle the total combined load, for both starting and running conditions. It’s also very important to consider whether your machines will start at the same time or in sequence. Simultaneous starts will require a greater capacity. We’re here to help with the load analysis and sizing recommendations if needed.
Is a rotary phase converter better than a static one?
Yes, overall, a rotary phase converter can provide true three-phase output, which offers much more reliable and balanced power when compared to static phase converters. Static converters only help a motor start, after which it runs on single-phase power, resulting in reduced torque and efficiency, and often overheating or premature failure of the motor. This is why static phase converters only provide around two-thirds of the power that rotary phase converters provide.
In contrast, rotary phase converters support full horsepower and performance, making them ideal for heavy-duty or continuous use applications.
Can I install it myself?
Yes, if you’re a more experienced customer in electrical wiring and looking for a more cost-effective option, we offer DIY-friendly Quick Build Kits, Basic Kits, and Basic Panels.
Quick Build Kits: Includes all the necessary components to wire a rotary converter panel (motor not included) and are pre-organized for straightforward assembly.
Basic Kits: include raw parts and a spool of necessary wire; cutting, stripping, and crimping the wire is required during assembly. Does not include motor or panel.
Basic Panel: Preassembled panel ready to go right out of the box. All that is required is connecting the lead wires from a motor (not included) and wiring in the single-phase in and three-phase power out.
All kits come with detailed instructions, and we provide troubleshooting installation videos and customer support to guide you during the assembly and installation.
Do I need to use a transformer with a phase converter?
Sometimes, if the equipment you are running requires a different voltage from your input power, then a transformer may be necessary to step the voltage up or down.
For example, if your utility provides 220V single-phase and your machine needs 480V three-phase, a transformer would be required in addition to the converter. We're happy to help you determine if one is needed.
What happens if my converter isn't balanced?
An imbalance in power can cause serious problems, especially for sensitive electronics or precision machinery like CNCs. An unbalanced system may result in:
Overheating Motors
Reduced Motor Life
Malfunctions in Control Systems or Drives
That’s why all Powerline phase converters are engineered to keep voltage imbalance to within 1–5%, ensuring stable and safe performance.
Do phase converters work with CNC machines?
Yes, Rotary phase converters can absolutely run CNC machines. Our high-quality rotary converters can be a great solution for powering CNC equipment in shops and garages where three-phase power isn't necessarily available.
CNC machines can be more sensitive than standard motors and require clean, balanced power for optimal performance. While rotary phase converters naturally provide strong three-phase power, the generated leg may have a voltage variance of about 5–10%, which is typically acceptable for many machines—especially older or less sensitive models.
For the best performance with CNC, here are some considerations and recommendations:
Sizing the converter two times larger than the machine’s listed horsepower
Running only one CNC at a time per converter for stability
If you’re unsure whether your CNC setup is a good fit, just reach out, and we’ll walk you through the right configuration to ensure reliable operation. For many users, a rotary phase converter is the perfect balance of performance, affordability, and simplicity, even for CNC applications.
